CHAPTER SIX

ONCE Rena had gathered her nightclothes and slipped through the side door of the huge closet into their private bath, she quickly showered. When she got out, she used a blow dryer to dry her hair before dressing in the nonrevealing blue satin pajamas and matching satin wrap she’d bought. She cinched the belt snugly around her waist, then hesitated before she stepped out into the bedroom.

Ford not only seemed to have good intentions toward her, but he’d acted on them. But what about her good intentions? If she continued to be so withdrawn and uneasy with him, she risked insulting him.

She was a complete novice at so much, particularly in sexual things, but if she somehow held Ford off until she felt completely at ease, he might never have a true wife.

She could spoil the sweetness between them and virtually guarantee not only the failure of this marriage, but Ford’s animosity if she didn’t make the same good faith effort for Ford’s benefit as he had for hers.

There was nothing abnormal or wrong about a wife having sex with her husband, so if Ford wanted a complete marriage with her to start tonight, she shouldn’t resist.

The conclusion brought a knee-weakening surge of dread, but the dread she felt was tempered by a surprising anticipation. Her feminine curiosity was also strong, but a life of reserve and painful shyness made it difficult to think about making herself sexually vulnerable.

By the time she quietly stepped out into the bedroom, Ford was already in bed, sitting with his back against the mahogany headboard, the covers up only as far as his lean waist.

Rena had seen shirtless men before, but they’d been ranch hands working hard on a hot day. To see Ford bare-chested was startling and made her racing heart shift into a faster rhythm. He also must have showered in one of the other bathrooms, because his hair still carried a sheen of faint dampness.

His dark gaze took her in from head to bare toes and a slow smile spread over his stern mouth.

“Very pretty, Mrs. Harlow. Damned pretty.”

“Thank you,” she said, frustrated by the heavy blush of pleasure his words caused her.

Sexy was the only word for the look he gave her, and her insides were jittery with excitement. Cowardice was tying her in knots, but hadn’t she just decided to let him have his way?

His dark gaze followed her every move as she walked to her side of the bed and took off the satin wrap. Ford flipped the covers down and she shakily climbed into the bed, lying back on the pillow as she reached for the covers.

Ford dragged them over her as he rolled close and braced his fist on the mattress at her waist to hover over her. Just that quickly, he swooped down.

The very carnal kiss he lavished on her left her trembling and clinging to him by the time he ended it. She loved the solid definition of steely muscle beneath his warm skin and she couldn’t seem to stop touching him.
